Prefabricated Wrist-Hand Orthosis
A prefabricated wrist-hand Orthosis (WHO) may provide effective support to a painful wrist. Made from fabric, laces, and Velcro, a WHO can greatly reduce motion at the wrist. The Orthosis typically contains the hand and wrist while leaving the fingers free and extends up the forearm in an effort to extend its leverage and functionality. A rigid thumb post may be incorporated. It also includes removable Palmar support to provide maximum versatility and patient customization.
A support of this type may be used to treat many injuries, including:
- Wrist Sprains
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Thumb sprains
- Post surgical revisions
With easy, one-handed application, this brace ensures proper contour around the bony prominences.
Custom Wrist-Hand Orthosis
When tough, cast-like rigidity is required for specific structure immobilization, a custom-made wrist-hand Orthosis (WHO) can be fabricated from semi-rigid plastic. This design combines secure stabilization with comfort and hygiene.
The Orthosis can be gauntlet-style, where the size and shape of the custom WHO is not greatly different from a prefabricated model but the rigidity is far greater. This design is appropriate for circumstances in which durability, comfort and function must be combined. Patients requiring a tough wrist-hand orthosis for working purposes may find this design to most functionally satisfy their needs.
Custom WHOs can also be fabricated as a resting-type Orthosis to provide a comfortable resting position for patients who require a specific hand and wrist position over a greater span of time for rehabilitation or recuperative purposes. This type of Orthosis is typically open along the back of the hand and up the forearm and utilizes padded Velcro straps to maintain positioning.
